BMW F30 Gateway connection guide

Here is the guide for connecting the PT_CAN, PT_CAN2, power, fan control, and accelerator pedal signals to the Gateway device and ECU.
The main connections needed for this modifications are: A46*1B, X13*1B, and Z8*3B connectors.
This guide is based on N20/N26 engine and DME. Connections for B46/B48 and B58 may be different.

Before you start, please familiarize yourself with:

PT_CAN to Gateway Device:

  • PT_CAN_H:

    • Pin 28 on A46*1B (Blue/Red wire) should be connected to CAN1H (Pin 10 on your Gateway device).
  • PT_CAN_L:

    • Pin 13 on A46*1B (Red wire) should be connected to CAN1L (Pin 23 on your Gateway device).

PT_CAN2 to Gateway Device:

  • PT_CAN2H:

    • Pin 43 on A46*1B (White/Yellow wire) should be connected to CAN2H (Pin 11 on your Gateway device).
  • PT_CAN2L:

    • Pin 44 on A46*1B (White/Blue wire) should be connected to CAN2L (Pin 24 on your Gateway device).

Power and Ignition Connections to Gateway Device:

  • KL30 (Battery Power Supply):

    • Pin 1 on A46*1B should be connected to KL30 IN (Pin 1 on your Gateway device).
  • KL15 (Ignition Supply):

    • Pin 22 on A46*1B should be connected to KL15IN (Pin 15 on your Gateway device).

Fan Control Connections:

  • Fan Cut-Out Relay:

    • Pin 4 on A46*1B is used for the fan cut-out relay and should be controlled by the ECU.
  • Fan PWM Signal:

    • Pin 18 on A46*1B is the fan PWM signal and should also be controlled by the ECU.

Accelerator Pedal Connections:

  • The accelerator pedal should be connected to the ECU or to the analog inputs on the Gateway device in case you want to send throttle position over the CAN bus.

  • 5V Supply for Accelerator Pedal:

    • Pins 7 and 24 on A46*1B provide the 5V supply for the accelerator pedal.
  • Ground for Accelerator Pedal:

    • Pins 11 and 27 on A46*1B are the ground connections for the accelerator pedal.
  • Signals for Accelerator Pedal:

    • Pins 16 and 21 on A46*1B are used for the two signal outputs from the accelerator pedal.

X13*1B Connector Connections:

  • Pin 1 and Pin 11:

    • These pins control the AC compressor on the engine. Both components are controlled by the FEM (Front Electronic Module), and it is recommended to use the original BMW AC compressor.
  • Pin 9:

    • This pin controls the starter. It is capable of driving a 2JZ starter and is also controlled by the FEM.

Z8*3B Connector Connection:

  • KL31 (Ground):

    • Pin 3 on Z8*3B should be used as KL31 for the Gateway device.
  • KL15 (Ignition Supply for ECU):

    • Pin 1 on Z8*3B should be used to control the main relay for the standalone ECU.

Notes:

  • Ensure that all connections are securely made and wires are properly insulated.
  • For CAN signals, use twisted pairs to minimize electromagnetic interference, ensuring the integrity of communication between the vehicle and the Gateway device.
  • Double-check all connections to prevent any miswiring that could damage components or cause malfunction.
